Jefferson Township's Performing Hearts Challenger Program
The Jefferson Township Challenger Sports and Recreation programs are set up for school age children with disabilities. The program was started in 2007 with baseball in the spring and then soccer in the fall. The program welcomes all children with any physical or mental disability, and children from neighboring towns are welcome as well. Also, the program encourages the participation of some 'buddies' to offer helping hands to the kids. Buddies can be school age kids or adults. The guiding principles of the program are to:
  1. Make it fun for the kids
  2. Get them moving, as some just don't have the opportunity to play
  3. Have them feel good about themselves.

Starting this summer (2010), Performing Hearts will be teaming with Jefferson Township's Recreation Department to provide a dance program for the children. The Dance Academy of North Jersey has volunteered its facilities and personnel to help manage the program.
